What have you heard about starting a career in the digital space, gender-biased, easy or difficult? Do not let the definition of others define what and who you are. In this article, I will share my journey into the digital space, list some careers you can take advantage of, and show you how to pick a career for yourself.

The Digital space is rapidly growing and evolving, though still holds opportunity for thousands who can create employment for themselves and others, or learn to be better at their work space. It might seem like a hard core starting a career in the digital space, but it is not. Just as we study for years to attain a certificate that qualifies us for the Labour market, so also we need to learn the skills around the digital space.

Opportunities are countless in the Digital space, ranging from Digital Marketing, Coding and Programming, Machine Language, Data Science, Data Analysis, Web Development, Blog development, Content and Social Media Management, etc. One can get distracted with all the skills available in the digital space if not properly guided.

I will tell you a story about me. Starting out, I wanted a taste of everything, paid for training on Web development, CompTIA A+, Networking, etc but couldn’t make way with any as the guidance wasn’t there. It took a conscious effort to settle for Digital Marketing as every other career wasn’t making a pathway for me. I settled for Digital Marketing with two things in mind. I wasn’t able to cope with understanding how programming works though I didn’t let that define me, and I saw a marketing opportunity at a very early time. If everyone starts coding who will market their skills, and showcase their skills to the world for patronage and business. When I couldn’t get through with coding, I wasn’t depressed. I only felt I needed to do me, find where my strength could be seen and not my weakness. I started my career in the digital space attending a lot of seminars, some were planned some weren’t, and thankfully I had support from one of the best tutors there is in the Digital space with a large heart and support for female recruitment to the digital space.

During one of the events, I attended I met a speaker who told me that finding the purpose “YOU” beats every other assignment on earth. Understanding your sincere purpose and what makes you stand out, is the key to wealth. The event felt like it was about me, it felt like she was tearing every wall of fear I had built. I am an Introvert with fear of the crowd and too much familiarity, but I love to speak and I love to make an impact, two opposite worlds right? Yeah. So I had to choose, and I pick purpose over fear. Being an Introvert is the weakness, being a speaker is the Strength, you get it right? One has to go for the other to manifest. I choose my strength any day. When I did my first stage training it was a really large attendance of over 1,500 people in attendance. It wasn’t easy at that time but I had to remind myself that I owned the stage, I spoke and made a huge impact, the number didn’t matter anymore.

Starting a career in the digital space is about understanding your weakness, strengths, interest to grow and having an eye for opportunity, you have to understand that it is “Purpose over Fear”. Mind you talking about the career in the digital space covers, programming, coding, marketing, and analysis.

There are several careers in the digital space that you can delve in, let’s talk about a few.

Before you choose where you want to start a career, you need to understand your personality type, understand if you are a team leader or a team player, understand your strength and weakness, and traits.

For example, if you are a good writer, you have no business with Social Media Management. If you are good with visual stories you have no business with writing. So before you make the decision to start a particular course in the digital space, speak with a trusted person who has been in the space before you and get their opinion about it, remember it is their opinion and it doesn’t define you or your success. Get their opinion, weigh your options, pick the best, and learn until something happens.
